Lawnside follows Letters and Sounds as a resource to teach high quality phonics to support reading and spelling. It is important that children use pure sounds from the very beginning so please use the links on this page to ensure their pronunciation is correct.
Children earn rewards for learning their 'Rainbow Spellings' of key words needed for reading and writing and more formal spelling lessons are taught from Year 2 onwards using the 'No Nonsense Spelling' programme. We use 'Penpals' to teach handwriting and there are support sheets below to enable parents to reinforce correct pencil grip and letter formation at home.
Lawnside promotes reading for pleasure through Guided Reading sessions and individual reading both at school and home. Children have home access to Bug Club and in Key Stage 2 they begin to use Accelerated Reader which encourages the reading of high quality books with comprehension checked through online quizzes.
Further information about Rainbow Spellings, Penpals and Accelerated Reader is below and the Reading Diaries children bring home have many ideas to help support phonic and reading development. Please note in there any reading that is done at home or any questions you may have.
